The Headstrong Project Hosts Words of War. LifeMinute.tv.

The thrills and horrors of combat… The experiences of families with loved ones at war… And especially, the difficulties for those returning home…

These were among the themes explored through celebrity readings — by Jake Gyllenhaal and Joanne Tucker, among others — of wartime poetry, literature and letters at Words of War, a presentation hosted by The Headstrong Project, which aims to provide cost-free, stigma-free mental healthcare to veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Celebrities Participate to Benefit Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans. New York Post.

Hollywood hunk Jake Gyllenhaal has a deep side, too. The star showed off his poetry reading skills — and opened his wallet — to benefit Iraq and Afghanistan veterans on Wednesday night. The star took the stage at the IAC Building to perform a Wilfred Owen poem, “Dulce et Decorum Est,” as part of the Headstrong Project’s Words of War event. Then, Gyllenhaal broke the ice a few minutes into a charity auction by being the first to raise his hand and donate $5,000 toward treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder.
